Brunswick Co VA--Brunswick Co. Deed Book 6, p. 460

Deed 3-22-1760 between Thomas Vinson and John Vinson Jr. (my note--they are brothers if I deduce correctly from deed below) 20 lbs for 200 acres on south side Fountain Creek and on both sides on Linches Branch. Adj. lands of Thos. Vinson, Moses Vinson and Rocky Branch. Witnesses: John Vinson Sr., Henry Cook, Drury Vinson. Acknowledged in court 4-28-1760 by Thomas Vinson

Made the 20th day of June 1761 between Moses Vincent and Sarah Vincent, his wife, parties of the first part, and John Medearis, for 37 pounds, conveying 90 acres on South side of Fountains Creek. Signed by Moses Vinson and Sarah Vinson (note two spellings in one document). Witnesses were John Medaris Jr and Wm. Buford. Indenture acknowledged in Court on 6-22-1761 by Moses Vincent. Deed Book 6, p. 683

Sussex Co. Deed Book D, 1768-1772 p. 79 10-8-1768 Jubal Hix of Johnston Co. NC to Joseph Prince of Sussex Co.... Wit: John Vinson, Thomas Tomlinson and Drury Vinson

c. 1770 "A Trew Copy of Capt. James Wootens Muster List" includes Drury Vinson, Sergt. On reverse it says "all belonging to Johnston." (Note that Johnston is a county in North Carolina, not VA)

In 1770 a deed transferred land from Moses Vincent & Sarah to Wm. Brown.

Brunswick Co Deed Book 10 1770-173 p204-208 8-23-1771 between Robert Howard and Sarah his wife and John Vinson of Brunswick CO in Meherrin Parrish and Joseph Vinson 150 acres on the south side of Fountain Creek...Jeremiah Brown land conveyed to John Vinson uncle of Joe Vinson and Thomas Vinson father to Joe Vinson and was devised to Moses Vinson by John Vinson grandfather to Joe Vinson.

(So by this I deduce there was a John Vinson Sr who had sons John Vinson Jr and Thomas Vinson. Thomas had a son, Joseph, grandson of John Sr and nephew of John Jr. Where Moses fits in, I do not know, but his wife's name was Sarah. There was also an Aaron, who lived next to John Sr. I'd make the leap and say there were brother John Sr, Moses and Aaron. My guess is Drury is the next generation down, a cousin or brother of Thomas Vinson)

(Many thanks to Emily Kantor for sending the following): Johnston County NC deeds, from the US Genweb archives, deed book V-1, p 104, 9-21-1795, Drewry Vinson of Johnston Co. to Archibald Vinson of Johnston Co. for NL & Aff. to my son (1) 150 acres SS Neuse River, part of a pat. to Francis Bettis, 21 May 1741 (2) 300 acres on the River adj. Millers corner being a tract Drewry Vinson bought from John Baucum (3) 290 acres pat to John Vinson Sr., SS Neuse River (4) 300 acres being part of this tract pat. to John Venson Sr. ,adj Aaron Vinson, Norris Ck. being this plant. whereon John Vinson Sr. formerly lived. Wit: W. Bryan, Winifred Vinson. Signed Drury Vinson, Nov. Ct. 1795b

(So, if I interpret that right, John Vinson Sr. was granted a land patent of 290 acres on the Neuse River in Johnston Co, which he lived on, adjacent to Aaron Vinson, and the plantation was perhaps called Norris Creek? Then possibly John Vinson Sr. gave this land to his son Drury, who also purchased additional land from John Baucum and some that had been granted to Francis Bettis, and with this deed all of this land of Drury Vinson's went to Archibald Vinson, as witnessed by Winifred Vinson and signed by Drury. The guess being that Mom witnessed Dad Drury  giving son Archibald the land he had got from his father John Sr. who, I'm guessing, had a brother Aaron. And maybe a brother Moses. Wow.)

According to a family tree posted on ancestry.com, the Johnston Co, North Carolina marriage records show:

On 3-31-1797 Archibald Vinson wed Ruth Smith (her dates are given as 2-1-1779 to 4-29-1857). The same family tree lists Archibald born in 1776 and died in 1856. I doubt the death date, as I think I can find Ruth living in 1850, and can not find him. The same tree lists Ruth Smith as the daughter of John Smith (1736-1826) and (sigh) Edith Avera.

Elizabeth Vinson married Alexander Avery Jr. 1-31-1800 according to Johnston County NC index to marriages

1820 census, Johnston County, NC (page 50 of 55 on ancestry.com)

James Vinson Sr. had in his household (including himself)

1 male under 10 yrs old

1 male 10-15

1 male 26-44 (likely James)

2 females under 10 yrs old

1 female 10-15

1 female 26-44 (likely his wife)

the census taker jiggled with the format so most likely it is 5 family members engaged in Agriculture

2 male slaves and 1 female under 14 yrs old

1 male and two female slaves 26-44

The next household listed 1820 Johnston Co is

Archibald Vinson who lists one male above age 45

1 female under 10

1 female 10-15

1 female 26-44

1 female over 45

3 in the household engaged in agriculture

2 male slaves under 14, 1 male , 1 male 14-25  and 1 above 45

1 female under 14

One page away is a name that looks like Pason or Patron Vinson (which in 1810 was transcribed as Paton)

1 male under 10

2 males 26-44

1 female 70-80

Slaves: 2 male 10-24, 1 male 24-36, 2 females under 10, 3 females 10-24, 1 female 24-36

On the previous census page are Hinton (?) Vinson, Abner (?) Vinson and James Vinson. Hinton and James are both 30-40 if I've read my columns right, and Hinton has a boy under five in the house, and James has many boys. I didn't count the girls at this go round.

Also on Page 1 of the Johnston Co census for 1830 are Aaron Avryett, and Hardy Avera.

1840 census, Johnston NC p 61 of 85 on ancestry

Archibald Vinson

1 male 70-80

1 female 20-30

1 female 60-70

3 members of the household engaged in agriculture

1850 census, Johnston County NC, district 7

Lundford Richardson, age 41, farmer, estate value 4790, born NC

Lorinda, age 38, born NC (as they all are)

Martha, age 11

William, age 8

Clem (male), age 4

Rosetta, age 1

Ruthie Vinson, age 69

(From this I take the guess that Lorinda Richardson is the married name of a Vinson daughter, and also presume that Archibald is dead by 1850)

(Note that in 1840, "Lunsford" Richardson was one census page away from Archibald Vinson and has in his household 1 male 30-40, 1 female 20-30, 1 male under five and one female under 5--looks like Lundford, Lorinda, a son who didn't make it, and Martha. Note also that he had 18 slaves.)

1860 census, Johnston Co, NC, Neuse River, post office Beulah

Lundford, age 6
