From the grandkid: "I really don't know that much about my father's family. He did have two brothers, Joe and John and a sister Sophie. They have all passed away. My grandfather died when I was young. His name was Michael (I think). He was a butcher in Chicago. He came from Russia. I believe a brother also came with him. My grandfather was an alcoholic and on every legal document they had he would record dates differently and spellings of names. My grandmother never learned to read or write so she never knew what he had done till he had died and my dad was trying to get things straightened out (my grandfather recorded my grandmother's birthday different on each of their children's birth certificates and on their marriage license). I think they were married on Feb. 11, 1917. My grandmother's name was Stella Marchuk (SP?). She came from Austria as a child with an aunt. I was told she was an only child and her father was sickly and couldn't support his family. An aunt was coming to America so they asked her to take my grandmother with her to America. I'm not even sure which side of the family the aunt is from. My grandmother couldn't remember when I had asked her years ago. My grandmother couldn't remember how old she was when she came over either, and she didn't know how old she was when she married. I know she was impressed that my grandfather was a butcher. She said that is why she married him--because she knew she would never go hungry."
Based on that:
1917 draft registration: "Micheal" Dubovik of 1217 14th in Chicago, under citizenship it says, "An alien." Where born? Grodno, Russia. Born March 15, 1891. Occupation: Laborer in boiler shop, Edison Co. 22nd and May St. Reason for exemption: support of father and wife. Tall and of medium build with brown hair and brown eyes.

Also registering for the draft in Chicago was a Sam Dubovik or 1118 W. 14th, born Sept. 14, 1895 in "Grodnau" Russia, also an alien, occupation: baker, Case Martin Ca, Lake and Wood St., single, of medium build, medium height, with blue eyes and red hair. This doesn't necessarily represent a relative of Mike Dubovik, because a glance through the Duboviks on rootsweb shows that many came from Grodno, Byelo, Russia.
1930 census, Chicago, W. Ashburne: Mike "Dubovick" age 39, born in Russia, married at 25, occupation" laborer in factory. Wife Stella, age 32, born in Austria, married at 18. Daughter Sophie, age 12, born in IL. Son Joe, age 10, born in Indiana. Son John, age 9, born in Indiana.
