In brief, this paper trail shows that Nell Avery's husband was the grandson of John H. Murchison & Beulah Cates.

The marriage record for Nell's father-in-law shows him as John H. Murchison Jr., marrying Beulah Cates.

The 1880 census, however, shows John H's father's name as Henry, with a middle initial that doesn't look like J. Hmm.

Beulah was the daughter of John Cates and first wife (perhaps Carrie Harris). Her stepmother = Lela.
