7-23-1926 Lauderdale Enterprise: Gates: Mr. T.G. Avery and children, Carroll and Lena Mai, spent Sunday in Jackson with his daughter, Mrs. W.E. Perry. They were accompanied home by little Nell Avery who had been visiting her sister for several weeks.

8-7-1993 Memphis Commercial Appeal: John Henry Murchison, 84, former editor and publisher of the Halls Graphic, a weekly newspaper, died Thursday at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. Murchison, born in Maury City in Crockett County, worked for the Graphic before becoming its editor and publisher for 40 years until he retired in 1972. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Halls First Baptist Church, where he was a member, with burial in Halls Cemetery. Halls Funeral Home has charge. He was a member of the Halls Rotary Club, a recipient of the Halls Man of the Year award in 1985, and was a Sunday school teacher, a Boy Scouts of America master and a volunteer sports announcer for local events. He was a graduate of Memphis State University and had attended Cumberland University. Mr. Murchison, the husband of Nell Avery Murchison, also leaves two sons, John H. 'Buddy' Murchison of Bartlett and Charles Murchison of Nashville; a sister, Elizabeth Baker of Houston, Texas, and seven grandchildren.

2-20-1994 Memphis Commercial Appeal: Halls Nell Avery Murchison, 78, retired teacher, died Friday after a stroke at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Halls First Baptist Church, where she was a member, with burial in Halls Cemetery. Halls Funeral Home has charge. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Mrs. Murchison, the widow of Henry Murchison, leaves two sons, John H. 'Buddy' Murchison of Bartlett and Charles A. Murchison of Nashville; a sister, Lena Mae Mullins of Greenville, S.C.; two brothers, Paul Avery of Gates and C. R. Avery of New Concord, Ky., and eight grandchildren.

5-25-1923 Crockett County Sentinel, Alamo Items: Mr. John Cates, age 64, died at his home here Friday afternoon about 6 o'clock after an illness of several months. Mr. Cates had lived here all his life and had a host of friends. The funeral was conducted in the First Christian Church Saturday at 10:30 a.m. by Elders Alligood and Gorsuch. Burial was in the Alamo Cemetery. He is survived by his wife and 4 children, Mrs. J.H. Murchison of Halls, Blythe Cates of Memphis, and Jack and Charles Cates, also two brothers Wash and Milton Cates of this place.
        (His will, probated 5-26-1923, names wife Lela Cates as executor, and he desires her to continue the business--leaves her the store building and home--and mentions sons Jack and Charles under age 21, and daughters Blythe Cates and Beulah Murchison and heirs of daughter Lois Cates Perminter. Witnesses J.O. Smothers and I.N. Lemond)

12-5-1946 obit of Milton Cates (brother of Beulah Cates Murchison's father) says he was last and youngest of 7 sons of the late Charles and Sarah Cates (Milton was 82 when he died).
